Travis Humble is director of the US Department of Energy’s Quantum Science Center and a Distinguished Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Travis leads the development of new quantum technologies and infrastructure to impact the DOE mission of scientific discovery. Travis also holds a joint faculty appointment with the University of Tennessee Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education to work with students in developing energy-efficient computing solutions. Travis is chair of the ACM Publications Steering Committee on Quantum Computing and Vice Chair of the IEEE Quantum Technical Community. Travis received a doctorate in theoretical chemistry from the University of Oregon.

Building a Quantum-HPC Ecosystem
Presentation Abstract:
At ORNL, we are integrating quantum computers with existing computational and networking infrastructure while adapting advanced use cases for emerging hybrid Quantum-HPC platforms. Our approach to building the Quantum-HPC ecosystem has produced new tools and techniques that help grow diverse user communities into early adopters of quantum technology. Here, we review the range of hardware and software systems involved and discuss how their applications have supported community development. We also highlight progress toward a lab-wide quantum ecosystem that incorporates quantum networks and quantum sensing environments to enable next-generation scientific discovery.
