Brian Spears is a senior technical leader in artificial intelligence, scientific computing, and national security. As technical director for the DOE’s Genesis Mission, he helps lead a major federal effort to advance AI, strengthen U.S. technological leadership, and support national security. Previously, he led AI strategy at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he advanced the use of AI for science and national security and led modeling efforts behind the National Ignition Facility’s historic fusion ignition milestone. He is a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at LLNL and has received multiple honors for leadership, research, and innovation in AI and high-performance computing, including two Secretary of Energy Achievement Awards.

Genesis: transforming AI for US Science, National Security, and Applied Energy
Session I Presentation Abstract:
Genesis is a Department of Energy mission to transform science and mission execution by coupling frontier AI with trusted data, high-performance computing, experimental facilities, and operational workflows. Its aims are to double R&D productivity and deliver innovation overmatch: the ability to respond to emerging challenges on timescales faster than U.S. adversaries. This talk will present the Genesis vision and early examples in scientific discovery, national security, and applied energy that illustrate how AI-enabled workflows can accelerate analysis, design, and decision-making. I will then outline the path forward: the launch of teams focused on National Science and Technology Challenges; the growing set of shared resources now available through the Genesis Platform, including models, data, compute, tools, and workflow services; and the next phase of delivery, including Workbench as a common user environment and the emergence of agentic systems that can help scientists and engineers plan, execute, and learn within mission and governance constraints.
