Curt Jawdy is a licensed engineer and leader of TVA’s systems research work.  He has led a broad swath of R&D that has been applied at TVA, from metal printing to dendrochronology.  Curt’s first love professionally is modelling, and he led the project to completely modernize TVA’s River Forecast Center.  He is leading the scoping of a project to bring AI into TVA’s transmission planning efforts, and excited to collaborate at this conference.

Presentation Title:

Ideas to Silicon to Operations: Creating Impactful Decision Systems

Presentation Abstract:

In this talk, Curt will draw on his experience implementing impactful decision systems at TVA.  He will walk through lessons learned about the human side of deploying algorithmic decision making at an electric utility.  He will share insights on:

  • How to clearly separate ends and means in complex systems
  • How to build stakeholder buy-in for emerging technologies that are poorly understood by the public
  • How to create systems that get adopted by industry
  • How to set up win-win partnerships around decision systems
  • How to design for maintainability
  • How to avoid getting bogged down in “Enterprise IT Jail”

Curt aims to help R&D staff get their innovations employed by industry through these learnings.
