Dr. Nina Balke is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at North Carolina State University and Director of its Analytical Instrumentation Facility. She earned her Ph.D. in Materials Sciences from the Technical University of Darmstadt in 2006. Following a Feodor Lynen Fellowship at UC Berkeley, she became a research staff member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences beginning in 2010, before joining NC State in 2021. Her research centers on developing advanced scanning-probe microscopy techniques—especially electrochemical and electrochemomechanical methods—to probe nanoscale processes in energy storage and functional materials, including batteries, supercapacitors, and ferroelectric oxides. She has secured prestigious funding like a DOE Early Career Award and serves as an Associate Editor for Energy Storage Materials.
